10th videophotographic contest rules and regulations 2025

Deadline for entries: APRIL 21, 2025

Loads of fabulous prizes to be won: cruises and travel to the most beautiful places in the world, diving and underwater photographic equipment, and much more.
A selection of the works will be exhibited to the public and will be shown for the duration of "IL MARE A MILANO": nine days of art, entertainment and science, events and exhibitions relating to the sea, entirely free for visitors. The works received will contribute towards education and research programs and projects of the Civic Aquarium of Milan for the protection of marine environments — in the same spirit that Betum Casino brings engaging live casino entertainment right to your mobile screen. During the event, until Saturday 20 May, the public will be able to vote the print considered most deserving of the runners-up and determine 3 additional winners.

PHOTO/VIDEO CONTEST
The competition is divided into two categories:

1) Advanced (1st prize winners in other national or international competitions, magazine contributors and professionals)

Video: up to three marine videos (mini-DV or DVD) may be presented.

Portfolio: a portfolio of four prints (30x45 or 30x40) must be submitted, including:
A) 1 macro photograph (fish details acceptable);
B) 1 photograph of underwater environment (wideangle);
C) 1 portrait: one or two fish, marine reptiles or mammals (not macro);
D) 1 sea image using any technique (including B/W, digital processing or photomontage).
Prints must be accompanied by slide copies (24x36 mm) or CD with TIFF or JPEG files RGB 24bit (min. size 30x45 cm, 300 dpi for each) which will be retained by the organisation for file purposes.

2) Beginners (those participating in large scale contest for the first time or who have never won 1st prize before)

Video: up to three marine videos (VHS PAL or SVHS PAL, mini-DV or DVD - 20 minute max for each) may be presented.

Prints (30x45 max) and/or slides (24x36) and/or digital images on CD TIFF or JPEG files RGB 24bit on CD (min size 3 mega pixel for each) up to a maximum of five for each section:
A) Mediterranean: the "Mare Nostrum" and its flora, fauna and underwater panoramas (not macro);
B) Exotic: encounters and emotions from distant seas (not macro);
C) Macro: marine close-ups (mediterranean or exotic);
D) Sea outside water: not underwater photographs;
E) Processing work: sea images, obtained by digital processing and/or photomontage.

DIAPORAMA AND DIGITAL SERIES CONTEST
In cooperation with the Biennale Internazionale dell'immagine subacquea di Lugano (International biennial underwater image exhibit of Lugano)

The contest is open to all authors. A maximum of 4 digital pieces per author are admissible on CD or DVD, projectable, without installation of any software, with PC and single video projector with max resolution of 1024x768 pixels.

The contest is divided in two categories of audio-visual montage.

1) Diaporama: audio-visual montage about an aquatic theme. Images must "tell a story" and be accompanied by a soundtrack (music and/or voice and/or sound effects). Diaporamas must have a maximum duration of 8 minutes.

2) Digital series: sequence of images on a single aquatic theme, accompanied by a music soundtrack. Digital series must have a maximum duration of 5 minutes.

UNDERWATER REPORTAGE CONTEST
In cooperation with SUB magazine

The contest is open to all authors who may present only one reportage, pertinent to the underwater world.
The reportage must be unpublished, and may be signed by two authors (for example, the author of the photographs and the author of the text). The images must be submitted as numbered slides or on CD in TIFF or JPEG RGB 24bit format (min. dimension 30x45 cm, 300 dpi each ) with a maximum total number of 30 images, properly equipped with captions. The text must be written in Italian, printed on paper, copied onto floppy disk in text format and must have a length of between two and three typewritten pages (3.600 - 5.400 characters, spaces included).
SUB magazine reserves exclusive rights to the publication of the winning reportages and will make any changes considered necessary for such. Contest winners will neither be able to claim any rights for the publication of the reportage (both text and illustrations) nor expenses of any kind related its production, even if a photograph is used for the cover of the magazine.

How to take part
Entries must be received no later than April 21, 2025 at:

No registration fee for foreign authors.

All slide frames and the reverse side of prints (without matboard or bases of any kind) must indicate the identification number and an arrow showing direction of display (top). Work thought to have caused harm to living organisms or environments will not be accepted.
The official language of the competition is Italian. For works presented in any other language, the author must provide a typed script of the work in English, French or German, either on paper, diskette or e-mail.

Awarding of prizes
The jury will award prizes to the three best entries in each category and section, for a total of 24 winners; 3 more prizes will then be awarded to the most deserving entries, among non-winning prints, by public vote.
A special jury of biologists will select the entry of the greatest biological significance among all those received. The jury reserves the right not to award prizes or to award special mentions. Prizes, awarded by indisputable jury decision, will be presented to the author in person, or to his/her deputy, on the evening of May 28, 2005 at the exhibition's location. Award-winning entries will be displayed during the prize-giving ceremony. The related negatives, slides or video masters may consequently be requested and will subsequently be returned to the author.

Return of entries
Winning entries will not be returned.
Non-winning entries will be returned, if requested as from two weeks after the end of the exhibition:
- by personal collection from the Aquario Civico di Milano by appointment;
- by ordinary mail, if suitable return packaging is provided, complete with entrant's address;
Any other arrangements must be coordinated with organizers

Warnings
In conformity with the copyright laws in force, the organisers will consider all work presented to be free of copyright protection. Authors participating in this competition therefore undertake to guarantee the organisers against any action that may be brought against them by any parties so entitled. Competition organisers will not be in any event be responsible in case of dispute. All authors authorise Verdeacqua and the Acquario Civico di Milano to duplicate, publish and use the work presented free of charge, for the present or future competitions and for teaching, scientific or other non-commercial only purposes, the only obligation being indication of the author's name. While ensuring maximum care and attention, the Organisation shall not be held responsible for loss of competition entries or damage thereto.
